Somatic EMDR Therapy and Somatic Therapy Services
What is a Somatic PractionerA Somatic Practioner in San Diego Can Be Someone with Advanced Training in Co-regulating Touch
A Somatic Practioner may practice many kinds of nervous system work, but they are not always massage therapists, and do not need a license to practice. If the therapist, like Kelli Redfield has a license, she has obtained further training in either Craniosacral Therapy (CST) or Somatic Experiencing, yoga or Hakumi. These types of trainings teach clinicians how to touch with consent and with evidence based holds. Each clinician will practice differently, but with similar co-regulation in mind.
Why Talk Therapy Isn't Always Enough: The Holistic Power of Somatic Therapy
Have you ever understood why you feel anxious, yet your body continues to react with a racing heart, tight shoulders, or a knot in your stomach?
Many residents in Escondido and North County San Diego reach a point where traditional talk therapy stops producing progress. You can analyze past events intellectually, but your body continues to act as though the threat is happening right now.
This occurs because trauma and chronic stress live primarily in the autonomic nervous system, an area of the brain that talk therapy cannot always directly access.
Touch is never required. If clinically appropriate, any touch-based intervention is discussed in advance, explicitly consented to, and stopped immediately at the client’s request. Clients may choose non-touch alternatives at any time, and declining touch will not affect access to care.
Moving Beyond Words: The "Bottom-Up" Healing Approach
While cognitive therapies work from the brain down to the body, somatic therapy works from the body up to the mind. By cultivating gentle, non-judgmental awareness around physical sensations, somatic therapy helps clear stored physiological tension.
Key benefits of incorporating a holistic somatic practice include:
Sustained Regulation: Learning how to pull your body out of fight, flight, or freeze states.
Greater Resilience: Expanding your capacity to handle life stressors without feeling overwhelmed.
Embodied Presence: Feeling truly comfortable and grounded inside your own skin again.

What to Expect Before and After an EMDR Session
If you're about to start EMDR therapy, or you're considering it, one of the most common things I hear from clients is some version of: "I don't really know what's going to happen. I'm nervous. Will it be intense? What do I do after? Am I going to feel worse?"
That anxiety before your first session is completely normal. You're about to do something unfamiliar, you're uncertain how your nervous system will respond, and you don't know if it will actually work. I want to walk you through exactly what to expect, both in the hours and days leading up to your session and everything that might happen afterward.
